Cannondale bikes now at Fusion

cannondale bad boy disc
Cannondale Bad Boy Disc Street Bike $1950

We are pleased to announce that Cannondale bikes are now available at Fusion Cycles.  Cannondale is a US company with a quality range of road, mountain bike and recreational bike styles.  Cannondale are well known in the bike industry and don’t need too much introduction but these words from their website are pretty cool!

“For us at Cannondale, it's building, testing and rebuilding; making it better in the process, never settling for "good enough". It's knowing it, verses guessing it and using the world's greatest athletes to prove it. It's having such high standards and expectations in how we want product to perform that we are relentless in our pursuit.

It's not about superfluous welds or fancy etchings, it's about performance, innovation, superior product. Does it contribute to the ride? Does it do what we want it to do? When we step back and look at our work, the answer is easy... it does, and we feel it everyday, knowing you'll feel it too.”

Cannondale Six Carbon
Six Carbons are full carbon down to the dropouts, and share the pro-Tour features common to the Elite line. The massively oversized tubes on the front triangle deliver outstanding performance, while the hourglass-shaped seatstays give the vibration-damping comfort racers need to keep a competitive edge.

The cannondale Six Carbon is available in four different colours (white, black, blue, silver) and ranges in price from $3000-$5500 depending on which Shimano groupset is preferred.

Fusion relocation – 68 Commercial Rd

Fusion Cycles is moving to 68 Commercial Rd, directly across the road from where we are now.  The new space will give us more room, direct access to a great coffee shop and we’ll have a great deck for customers to hang out on, after rides.

All going well, we will move in at the beginning of July.  Once settled, we will have a ‘shopwarming’ party where we will launch a fantastic new brand for Fusion Cycles – CERVELO.  Watch this space for more details in next month’s e-news.

Free Bike Maintenance Workshop – Sunday 14 June 3-4pm

Our next quarterly maintenance workshop is on a Sunday.  For our customers who have been unable to attend our Thursday night sessions, this one is for you.  We have found the Thursday night sessions are a bit rushed so the Sunday workshops will be more relaxed, you will have a chance to practice changing a tyre whilst the mechanic is there and the group will be smaller.  The usual topics will be covered:

  • How to change a flat tyre and tips to do it fast
  • What to do to maintain your bike after riding in the wet
  • General maintenance to prolong the life of your bike parts
  • Bike servicing – how often, what your bike will need

Bike Maintenance course is FREE and will be held at Fusion Cycles, shop 2, 53 Commercial Rd, Newstead. Click here to register by email if you haven’t already.

Bicentennial Bikeway Upgrade

coro drive bikeway

The Bicentennial Bikeway along Coronation Drive is currently being upgraded. Stage 1 of the project is due for completion in July and will have separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists along 400m of the track from Cribb St to Park Rd.

The broader project will see separate lanes for pedestrians and cyclists for the entire length of the bikeway and will be a staged process over the next 4 years.

As we know, the temporary boardwalk is a time cosuming, painful process when we have to walk in cleats.  We can avoid the construction zone by detouring onto the Coronation Drive footpath.  Traffic controllers will be organizing the footpath during work times.

Group Riding Etiquette Tips

Brake carefully
Ride safely and try to stay off the brakes. If you are inexperienced and too nervous to ride close to the wheel in front of you, stay alone at the back and practice. When the pace eases, don't brake suddenly, instead ride to the side of the wheel in front and ease the pedalling off, then drop back on the wheel. Practice on the back and soon you will be able to move up the line with a partner.

Point out obstacles
Point out obstacles such as loose gravel, broken glass, holes, rocks or debris on the road, calling out "hole" etc as well as pointing is helpful in case someone is not looking at your hand when you point. It is just as important to pass the message on, not just letting those close to the front know. Another obstacle is a parked car, call out "car" and sweep your hand around your back to let people behind know. Point out runners or walkers on bike tracks and slower bikes if you are passing someone on the road.

Don't leave gaps when following wheels
An appropriate gap between your front wheel and the person in front is around 50cm. Keep your hands close to the brakes in case of sudden slowing. Maximise your energy savings by staying close to the rider in front. Cyclists save about 30 per cent of their energy at high speed by following a wheel. Each time you leave a gap you are forcing yourself to ride alone to bridge it. Also, riders behind you will become annoyed and ride around you. If you are in the bunch and there is no one beside the person in front of you, you should move into that gap. Conversely, if you are that person and no-one moves into that gap beside you, you should move to the back of the bunch, the next pair to roll off will come back and one of those riders will fall in beside you.

Don't use your aero bars in a bunch ride
Never use your aero bars in a bunch ride - not even if you are at the front. Using aero bars means that your hands are away from the brakes. Aero bars are for time trial or non-draft triathlon use only.

Pedal downhill
Pedal downhill when at the front of the bunch. Cyclists dislike having to ride under brakes.

Experienced riders should share their knowledge
Experienced riders should point out any mistakes made by less experienced riders. This must be done diplomatically of course, but it is important to make people aware of unsafe riding and help them learn the right behaviour. Riding in a bunch is about everyone's safety.

Nutrition Tips – Fat Burning Supplements

The world of supplementation can be a mine field.  As more and more supplements come out that purport to do amazing things, with patented blends that ensure better outcomes than their competitor’s, it is becoming harder and harder for the consumer to know what works and what doesn’t.  A simple excursion through the supplement aisle at a supermarket will give you a small glimpse of what is available to the main stream. A venture into a supplement store can be mind boggling.   Supplements are big business but most athletes have no idea what most of the ingredients in their supplements do?  There has been a massive push recently in the US by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to try and clamp down on the unsubstantiated claims supplement companies make about their products and this has led to a large number of court cases and product recalls.

So what are the main ingredients in some of the big selling supplements and do they work?

Fat burners.
These supplements are sold under the premise that by talking a tablet or powder multiple times in the day you will increase your body’s ability to burn fat and lose extra body fat while not actually doing anymore work.

The main ingredient in the vast majority of Fat burners (those that seem to work anyway) is Caffeine.  Caffeine is not always on the ingredient list though and most provide large amounts of caffeine through plant based sources such as Guarana, Kola nut, and Green tea extract.

Caffeine allows you to exercise harder without feeling like you are exercising harder.  It affects a person’s Rate of Perceived exertion (RPE) so when you take caffeine in suitable doses you feel like you are working at a lower intensity than you actually are.  This means you can work harder and burn more energy without feeling like you are at your maximum.

Also at rest it causes an increase in Basal Heart rate.  This means that things are just going a little faster in the body.  Meaning that the body needs to work a little harder to maintain basic function and therefore you burn more energy at rest.  Very minor but over a long period it can be significant.

The amount of caffeine found in these supplements can be extraordinary.  One report on a fat burning supplement from the US suggested it contained >1,200mg of caffeine in a daily dose (the average cup of espresso has around 100mg).  These levels of caffeine can have significant detrimental effects on mental function, cardiac health, anxiety, not to mention the ability to totally destroy normal sleep patterns and behaviours.  Therefore even though people convince themselves that these supplements are working they are probably doing more damage than good.

Another that is losing favour now but is still in some fat burning supplements is L-carnitine.  Carnitine is important in the transport of fatty acids across the cellular membrane into the energy factories of the body.  This process has been identified as the limiting process that may be the reason why humans can’t burn fat at high exercise intensities.  Therefore the theory is that more carnitine would mean greater ability to transport fat into the cells where it can be burned for energy.  In practice, this is not actually the case.  Oral L-carnitine supplementation can in fact increase levels of carnitine in the body but research has shown that these levels aren’t actually increasing where it matters most in the cell membranes.  This means that more L-carnitine in the body cannot change the amount in the cell walls meaning it can’t affect fat metabolism as it has been suggested.

Recently a fat burning supplement has been recalled in the US due to it causing liver damage in a number of people taking it.  Although this is in the US, a lot of products still make their way onto Australia shelf’s and contain similar products to those in the US.

Athletes and weekend warriors alike need to be very careful when using these fat burning supplements as they can have serious long term consequences.
