Product Review – Zipp 808 Wheels and Garmin Edge 705

Zipp 808 Wheels, Garmin 705
The Guys at Fusion said I would notice the difference racing with ZIPP 808’s and how right they were!

In crits, cornering is smoother, acceleration better and top speed can be held longer. My average speed (on the Nundah track) is up about 2kph.

Adding a Zipp disc to the Zipp 808 on my Look T/T bike has also given a remarkable improvement over my previous wheels.

How do I know?
Because I use a Garmin Edge 705 to plot my riding and can compare all my performances in racing and training.
It is a great tool and couples with my Cycleops power hub.

Each day I download the ride data and compare speed, heart rate, cadence and power output with previous rides and can see on the map where I have been as well as the full ride profile.(plus lots of other stuff)
The best bit is that the Fusion Boy’s showed me how to best use all this gear and they keep my bikes in top shape as well.

Zipp 808 Wheelset RRP: $3895,  Garmin Edge 705 RRP: $549

Date Change: Fusion Games at Newstead Sun 18 July

Brought to you by Fusion Cycles and QSM Events, the Fusion Games will still include Criteriums and Duathlons but due to difficulties with road closures with the Teneriffe Festival, it is now on Sunday 18 July.

The date change will allow us to close the roads for longer so we can cater to more grades for the criteriums and give the duathlon competitors more time.

The course will still be along Wyandra St in front of Fusion Cycles, down the hill into the new part of Skyring Terrace and back again.  It will be a short, fast course with tight cornering. (roads will be closed to traffic for both duathlons and criteriums)
Entries will be open on the QSM Events website later this week.  Variety – the Children’s Charity, are the charity of choice for this event and donations can be made at the time of entering online.

We will need lots of volunteers on the day!  If you are not competing but would like to be involved, please click here to email Chelsie.

Customer Profile – Kelli Blackburn

Kelli Blackburn

Kelli Blackburn
Age: 37
Occupation: Executive Assistant, Vale Australia

How did you get into cycling?
My first real ride was in a triathlon when I was 20yrs old.  I really wanted to give it a go so with a borrowed slightly defective fluro yellow Repco, I finished 3rd in my first 400/12/4 race and was hooked!

Why did you visit Fusion Cycles?
When we moved to Brisbane and after watching the Mooloolaba Tri, I declared I was going to do the Noosa Tri. I needed a new bike and Fusion Cycles was our local shop.

Upon entering Fusion bike shop, I recall listening in amazement as Matt strongly opposed a more expensive bike to a customer because it wouldn’t have suited his needs. That in itself was a rarity and I knew we were getting involved with something pretty special. We looked at a lot of bikes, but I fell in love with the Scott Contessa.

From that first visit to Fusion we had complete trust in the brand and the staff.  In my opinion Fusion is not just a bike shop; it’s a community based centre for like-minded people that gather socially, drool over the newest bike bling or talk about up-coming races. Fusion’s support and presence at various triathlon and cycling races is always visible and their geniality extends to everyone, no matter what brand of bikes or clubs people belong to. Connecting energy?  They certainly do!

What do you ride and how often?
I now ride a 2009 Cervelo S1 with SRAM Force and Reynolds Attack wheels. Come June I’ll add mornings to my regular program of weekends and wind trainer sessions.  My favourite ride is out to Sandgate via Boondall Wetlands which I call The Boondall Blair Witch.  I love the rush of the winding Casuarina Woodlands; it’s where I can really make the bike work and get a good gauge on my fitness and bike skills.

What are your cycling goals?
My goal for 2010 is to do the GC Half Marathon in July, the duathlon series in Winter, team up with my husband Dale for the GC Half Ironman in October, the Gatorade series and then smash my unicorn: Noosa Tri.

Nutrition Tips: Carbohydrates

Carbohydrate is a fascinating nutrient and has a large impact on sporting performance but there is a lot of conflicting information floating around about carbohydrate and how much you need during training. To determine your carbohydrate requirements for an individual exercise session you need to ask yourself a few important questions.

1) How long will the session be for?
If the session is longer than 90 minutes it is important to take carbohydrate out on the bike with you. The muscles have a set store of carbohydrate called muscle glycogen. Muscle glycogen is finite and can be depleted. When this store runs out you “Hit the Wall” or “Bonk”. This is your body saying I have no more carbohydrate left in the muscles so I have to drop back my intensity.

2) What intensity is the session you are doing?
If you are doing an efforts session or a high intensity session then you will use your stores up faster and carbohydrate from food or fluids can be beneficial in maintaining your effort. Most cyclists would not think of taking carbohydrate out with them if they were doing a session of 8 x 5min efforts, but it may be beneficial in maintaining intensity in the last few repetitions of the session. This goes for racing as well. Most people doing a criterium of 45min plus 3 laps may not think that carbohydrate intake during a race would have a benefit, but a small amount around 20min in, may improve your ability to perform in the sprint at the end of the race. In very general terms it takes around 15-30min for a gel or sports drink to be absorbed and the body to be able to utilise the carbohydrate. So if it is a short race, get the carb in earlier rather than later. It is generally recommended that a person exercising at high intensity should consume around 30-60g/hr or ~1g of carbohydrate per kg per hour.

3) What form of Carbohydrate should you use?
Scientists have started to look at manipulating the type of carbohydrate in sports drinks and gels to see if they can increase the rate at which carbohydrate is absorbed. They have found that by including other types of carbohydrate mainly “Fructose” and “Maltodextrins” along with “Glucose” they can increase the rate of absorption and hence the body’s ability to burn carbohydrate to a higher level. Taking the potential rate of carbohydrate oxidation (burning of fuel) to around ~1.5g per min equating to around 90g of carbohydrate per hour. Products like lollies, soft drink, cordial, most gels and sports drinks contain only glucose. Products that integrate this research are starting to appear on the shelf and cyclists should be looking for products that use this latest research to maximise performance.

Before heading out onto the bike next time ask yourself these few simple questions and you will ensure you have enough high octane fuel to train at the red line.
