The inaugural Fusion Games were a terrific success with over 270 competitors across the duathlons and criteriums.  We’ve had great feedback from competitors saying that the crit course was safe though still technical and the races well organized.  The council has pledged support for the event next year where we will extend the duathlon course and possibly have a social ride as part of the event.  Thank you to Brisbane City Council, QSM Events, our sponsors, the Fusion volunteers and all the competitors and spectators for supporting the event!

Bike Route – Centenary Bike Track:  Fusion to Jindalee

This ride is about 40km and is a great ride for beginners as it is predominantly on bike track.  There are a few pinch climbs but mostly rolling terrain.  Many people don’t know this bike track exists.

From Fusion Cycles, continue towards Teneriffe on Commercial Rd and take the third right into Chermside St, then immediately right into Kent St.  Follow Kent St right to the end where it meets the bike track at Bowen Terrace, turn right onto the bike track and follow the track up onto the Storey Bridge.

Once over the Storey Bridge turn hard left onto Deakin street, then next left into Rotherham St, hard right onto Main St and first left onto Bright St. Pick up the bike track at the end of this street and continue on the bike track through Kangaroo Point cliffs. Turn right onto the Goodwill Bridge just before Southbank, turn left off the bridge and follow the bike track along the river al the way to the Regatta Hotel at Toowong.

Cross over at the lights at the Regatta and follow Sylvan Rd bike track to the Toowong roundabout.  Crossover Miskin St at Toowong roundabout, through the carpark, crossover Dean St and follow this bike track along the Centenary Freeway all the way to the Skatepark at Jindalee, just over the River.  From the skatepark at Jindalee, turn right at the bike track T junction and follow it for a couple of kilometres along the river to the end.  Where the bike track ends, turn around and head back the way you came

Cycling Tips – Field Testing for Cycling

I have had many cyclists ask about Lactic Threshold Tests and Vo2 and whether or not they should go for testing. These tests are a great way to see how your training is progressing but can be expensive and sometimes hard to access. There can also be issues with the calibration of the instruments used during the test which can lead to varying results. With this in mind there is a quick, simple and cost effective way (FREE!) to see how your training is going. Do your own Field Testing.

There are a few things to remember when conducting field tests.

  • Firstly your tests need to be repeatable, make sure you can replicate the test as closely as possible each time. For example complete your tests at the same time of day, the same environment and course each time and same equipment.
  • Specific, ensure you develop your tests with an outcome in mind, for example am I trying to test for speed, my endurance, my strength etc.
  • What is my physical condition at the time of testing. Ensure you are well rested, well hydrated, injury free and stimulant free (sorry no coffee!!).
  • Record results so you can compare next time you perform the tests.

Below is a good example to determine submax aerobic, maximal and sprint capabilities.

SubMax Aerobic Test:

  • 15min warm up increasing intensity every 5 mins.
    • 1st 5mins be a gradual warm up
    • 2nd 5mins should be at your endurance training pace
    • 3rd 5mins should be around 40kph, Time trial pace.

(Measure your heart rate in the last 30sec of each 5min block as a minimum and record the gearing used for each block)

Max Test:

  • Complete a 5min rest period before completing Max test
  • Start max test between 25kph and 30kph and increase 1 kph every 30seconds until exhaustion J

(Record gearing used during test and heart rate during last 30sec interval and max speed)

Sprint Capability

  • 45min recovery
  • On a climb with a steady gradient complete a 30sec max sprint effort from a standing start and mark (measure) distance, complete a 3min recovery and repeat max effort 2 more times.

Now for the results

  • Your 15min warm up should be replicated the same way each time you perform the test, although a drop in heart rate during each stage can indicate in increase in fitness level.
  • With your max test we are looking for an increase in max speed before exhaustion. Also recording your heart rate in the last 30seconds will give a good indication of your current max aerobic heart rate.
  • Sprint efforts, we would expect to see a greater distance covered on your 1st effort and a reduced drop in distance between the 2nd and 3rd sprints as an indication of improvement.

Field tests are a simple way to assess your performance levels at any stage of your training. They are a useful tool to determine if your training program is working and whether you need to make any changes.

Nutrition Tips: Fructose: A hidden danger

There has been a lot of press lately on the new plague of the twentieth century - Fructose.  This is mainly due to a rise in the use of High fructose corn syrup in foods especially in the US.  It is often the hidden sources of these sugars that are the issue.

Fructose and health
All sugars are not equal.  Fructose metabolism is different to glucose. It is absorbed differently (more slowly than glucose via different transporters). The rapid metabolism of fructose in the liver causes the increase in inflammatory and oxidative processes and the increase in the production of fatty acids and triglycerides.  These processes have been suggested as the link between fructose and obesity/lifestyle diseases.  All of these metabolic effects are different from other sugars like glucose.

What about Fruit.
Fructose is one of the main carbohydrate or sugars in fruit.  So should you be eating fruit?  The ingestion of fruit has been shown to be protective against the conditions large fructose intakes have been implicated in.

Most whole fruits containing only ~4-8g of fructose per serve, this is minuscule compared to a glass of fruit juice which may contain up to ~25g of fructose per glass.  Also fruits contain high amounts of nutrients like Vitamin C and anti-oxidants that help protect against metabolic diseases.  So the message to eat more WHOLE FRUIT is still a good one.

Does exercise reduce the risk?
Fructose has been shown to greatly improve performance in endurance events when consumed in specific ratios with other sugars.  This means that at certain times fructose is essential for performance.

People may argue that the small term benefit of fructose on performance may actually be doing long term harm.  The content of fructose in sports drink is actually only ~ 2g/100 mls. This is significantly less than the 5g seen in fruit juices and soft drinks. So the small intake of fructose in performance situations is far less than the daily intake of fructose from hidden food sources.

What is the bottom line?
The take home message is that not all sugars are equal in regards to their effects on health.  If you are not exercising regularly and training hard, hidden fructose should be more of a concern than if you are training hard and pushing your body every day.  If you are not training hard and only exercising for general health ensure you don’t over consume high sugar foods and eat more whole foods like fruit.  Less refined, whole foods should be the basis of any good sports nutrition plan.
