Cycling Tips – Lactic Threshold Session

Your Lactic Threshold session will focus on riding at constant cadence (pedalling speed) around 90RPM to 95RPM with our working effort between 80% to 85% of our maximum heart rate.. Our session will be on flat ground to ensure we can maintain high cadence. Key to the session is to stay between 80% to 85% effort without going above this mark. So here we go!

  • Complete 20min warm up in easy gear on flat road. Building to 80% effort for last 5mins of warm up.
  • Complete 10mins @ 85% effort cadence 90RPM to 95RPM.
  • Complete 5mins recovery @ 65% to 70% effort cadence 90RPM.
  • Complete 10mins @ 85% effort cadence 90RPM to 95RPM.
  • Complete 5mins recovery @ 65% to 70% effort cadence 90RPM.
  • Complete 5mins @ 85% effort cadence 90RPM to 95RPM.
  • Complete 15min warm down in easy gear.

Good luck and enjoy. Cheers Gilly

Team Fusion winners.Customer Profile – Briarna Mackie

Name: Briarna Mackie
Age: 26
Occupation: Eyebrow Shaping Artist & Beauty Wholesaler

How did you get into cycling?
I first started cycling back in 2003 when I joined a beginner’s triathlon squad on my trusty old mountain bike.  I soon upgraded to my first road bike and the transition from mountain bike to road bike was an amazing experience.  From then on I was hooked and love getting out on my bike whenever possible.

What brought you to Fusion Cycles?
My husband Craig has been a part of Fusion Cycles from the day they opened.  I followed and was introduced to their friendly staff. I now know that the knowledge these guys have, definitely makes them the best in the business.  It’s nice to know you will be looked after with all your cycling needs and they make you feel like you’re part of the Fusion family.

What do you ride and how often?
I ride an Orbea Orca - Durace. It is a comfortable ride and is the best road bike I have owned yet as it suits my geometry perfectly.  I owe that to the guys at Fusion for taking the time to find a bike to suit me. What an amazing difference it makes. I like to get out on my Orbea about 3 to 4 times a week.

What are your cycling goals?

I would love to improve my speed. Now that we have warmer weather and the start of the summer season has finally come around I look forward to entering some short course races and working on that speed!

PS. Bri came 2nd at the Noosa Tri on Sunday in her age group!  Awesome effort Bri!

Nutrition Tips – Solid v Liquid: Which carbohydrate is best?

Many athletes debate which form of carbohydrate sport food is the best.  Sports drink, Gel or Sports bar.  A recent battery of studies have attempted to answer this question.

Liquid vs Solid – Better to sip or chew.
Intuitively and from information purported by sports drink manufacturers we would say liquid carbohydrates, at suitable concentrations (6-8% or less), would deliver carbohydrate to the working muscles and be utilised more efficiently. Hence chose liquid over solid.  But the research doesn’t agree.

Athletes in this study were fed either a sports bar with water or the equivalent fluid and carbohydrate amount as sports drink.  Even though there was a slightly higher ability to utilise the carbohydrate for energy from the drink it was negligible and made no difference at the end of 3 hours of exercise.  So there is no difference between whether you chew or slurp your carbohydrate during exercise. The interesting side to this study was that athletes reported feeling significantly fuller with the bar and fluid compared to fluid alone.  This may be significant if you are doing longer endurance races and trying to ingest large amounts of calories and carbohydrates.   The take away message is that carbohydrate containing bar and fluid has the same effect as a sports drink.

Gel vs Liquid – Better to suck or slurp.
Many athletes prefer gels over sports drinks due to the convenience of gels.  So in exactly the same research protocol as above, athlete’s consumed either gel with fluid or equivalent carbohydrate and fluid as a sports drink every 15 min throughout a 3 hour exercise test.  As would be expected there was no difference between the gel and the sports drink from the body’s ability to use it to fuel exercise.  In reality, athletes would not consume the volumes of fluid that were consumed with the gels in this study.  So even though no serious GI issues were reported during this study, athletes often report high levels of GI distress when they consume large amounts of concentrated carbohydrates without sufficient fluid.  Take home message – When gels are consumed with sufficient fluid they are as effective as a sports drink at fuelling exercise.

In the real world which is better.  Are you training or racing?
In the real world the choice may be a little bit more complicated especially when considering the use of these products during racing compared to training.  The exercise intensity in these studies was reasonably low (50% of VO2max). Meaning even though GI issues were minimal in both studies, GI symptoms may increase as athletes start to approach max (ie. during racing.) You should always ensure that no matter what carbohydrate sources you use during racing, you trial them in training - at race intensity.  This will ensure that race day is an enjoyable experience.  This research reinforces the message that it really doesn’t matter what form your carbohydrate comes in, you just have to ensure you are consuming it.  Bar, gel, sports drink or sandwich.  It is about personal preference and often it is best to consume a number of different food sources to ensure “flavour fatigue” doesn’t set in.
Eat up the road!
